As officers from the Alexandria Police Department's Neighborhood Resource Unit (NRU) patrolled on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, they identified and arrested a man wanted for murder by the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office. The arrest occurred at approximately 6:01 p.m. in the 4100 block of Mt. Vernon Avenue when officers recognized the suspect from a law enforcement be-on-the-lookout alert.

The suspect, Marlyn Medrano Ortiz, 18, of Alexandria, Virginia, was wanted on charges of second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in Loudoun County. His apprehension marks a significant development in an ongoing investigation by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.

Assistant Chief of Police Easton McDonald expressed gratitude to the NRU officers for their work: "I want to thank the officers of our NRU for their diligence and observance while on patrol. They used good intelligence and relied on their knowledge of the areas they patrol to apprehend a violent criminal. We thank them for their dedication to keeping our City safe."

The NRU is part of Alexandria Police Department's commitment to community policing. Officers in this unit focus on building relationships, solving problems, and enforcing laws while addressing quality-of-life issues and community concerns through proactive measures.
