The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) has issued a rabies alert following the positive test result of a raccoon in the Taylor Run area. The incident occurred on October 23, 2024, when a raccoon came into contact with a dog in the backyard of its home. The raccoon was found to have rabies and is now deceased, while the dog is under confinement.

Residents who have had physical contact with a raccoon are urged to contact the Alexandria Health Department at 703.746.4910 during normal business hours. Currently, there is no evidence suggesting other animals in the area have contracted rabies, though there remains an increased risk.

To ensure safety, residents are advised not to feed or approach wild, stray, or feral animals. It is also recommended that pet owners keep their dogs and cats up-to-date with vaccinations and adhere to leash laws in public areas.

Rabies is described as a preventable yet deadly viral disease transmitted through saliva via bites or scratches from infected animals. Symptoms in animals include unexpected aggression, extreme drooling or foaming at the mouth, and unsteady walking.

If any animal displays symptoms of rabies, individuals should contact Alexandria Animal Control at 703.746.4444. For concerns regarding potential exposure to rabies for themselves or family members, residents should reach out to AHD at 703.746.4910 during regular business hours.
