Alexandria hosts events honoring history and culture throughout November

The city of Alexandria is set to honor Robert "Old Folks" Dawkins with a memorial unveiling ceremony at the Charles Houston Recreation Center on November 9. The event will begin with a reception at 1 p.m., followed by the dedication ceremony at 2 p.m. Dawkins will be remembered in the Alexandria African American Hall of Fame. A historical lecture titled “Scots in Servitude” will be presented by Dr. Jimmie McClellan at the Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum on November 14. This lecture is part of the ALX275 campaign, marking Alexandria’s 275th anniversary. Dr. McClellan will discuss how Scottish emigrants paid for their passage to North America through various forms of servitude.

On November 24, Music of the Regiment will perform a concert commemorating Marquis de Lafayette's visit to Alexandria in 1824, featuring period-instrument wind band music.

The Alexandria Film Festival will screen “Resolved: Never Again” on November 8, documenting Alexandria’s commitment to telling its complete history.

Madeline Feierstein will deliver a lecture on Philip Fendall II's anti-slavery views on November 8 at Lee-Fendall House Museum & Garden.

Veterans Day tours and other events are scheduled throughout November, including a World War II walking tour and lectures focusing on historical figures like George William Carlyle.

Several musical performances and cultural events are planned for mid-November, including an American Roots Music concert by Ken & Brad Kolodner Quartet and a wine-tasting event organized by the Alexandria-Caen Sister City Committee.
