The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for the City of Alexandria, effective from 12-8 p.m. on Thursday, July 4. The advisory warns of high temperatures that pose health risks, especially to vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. Those living in homes without air conditioning are particularly at risk.

The expected heat index values range from 100 to 105 degrees. Residents are advised to take precautions during this period.

Key recommendations include staying hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids and avoiding alcoholic and caffeinated beverages. People should remain indoors in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible. For those without air conditioning at home, public places like shopping malls, libraries, or cooling centers are recommended alternatives.

Outdoor activities should be limited. If being outside is necessary, it is advised to avoid strenuous activities, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

Residents are encouraged to check on family members, friends, and neighbors who may be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Symptoms of such illnesses include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and in severe cases, high body temperature or unconsciousness. In case of heat stroke symptoms, calling 9-1-1 immediately is crucial.

Pet owners are reminded to keep their animals cool and hydrated and never leave them in parked cars due to rapidly rising temperatures inside vehicles.
