The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for the City of Alexandria, effective from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10. The warning is in place as the heat index value is anticipated to reach or exceed 110 degrees, with conditions potentially reaching up to 112 degrees. Such extreme temperatures pose a significant risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for individuals residing in non-air-conditioned homes or apartments.

Residents are advised to take several precautions during this period:

- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, particularly water, and avoid beverages like alcohol and caffeine that can cause dehydration.

- Remain indoors in air-conditioned spaces as much as possible. For those without air conditioning at home, visiting public places such as shopping malls, libraries, or cooling centers is recommended.

- Limit outdoor activities and opt for lightweight and light-colored clothing if going outside is necessary. It is also important to take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

- Check on family members, friends, and neighbors who might be more vulnerable to heat-related health issues.

- Recognize symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke which include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, high body temperature, or unconsciousness. Immediate medical assistance should be sought by calling 9-1-1 if signs of heat stroke occur.

Pet owners are reminded to keep their animals cool and hydrated while ensuring they are not left in parked cars where temperatures can rise rapidly.
