Alexandria Beautification Awards honor architecture, community spirit, commercial innovation

The Alexandria Beautification Commission has announced the winners of the 2024 Alexandria Beautification Awards, recognizing outstanding contributions in architecture, community, and commercial categories. These awards celebrate projects that enhance the visual appeal and environmental sustainability of Alexandria.

In the Architecture category, three projects were honored. The United States Patent and Trademark Headquarters at 600 Dulany Street received recognition for its architectural commitment. The Potomac Yard–VT Station South Pavilion at 3001 Potomac Avenue was praised for sustainable practices such as recycling construction waste and managing rainwater to preserve local wetlands. Douglas MacArthur Elementary School at 1101 Janneys Lane was acknowledged as the first net-zero-ready school for Alexandria City Public Schools.

The Community category recognized neighborhoods and groups enhancing local environments. At 44 Canal Center Plaza, weekly community events are held free of charge, with unique statues and artwork contributing to beautification efforts. Simpson Park at 426 East Monroe Avenue showcases gardens maintained by the Master Gardeners of Northern Virginia, featuring native plants and providing a habitat for wildlife. Winkler Botanical Preserve at 5400 Roanoke Avenue offers a green sanctuary with trails, streams, a lake, and forested areas.

In the Commercial category, Eisenhower East Community Park at 750 Port Street was noted for its environmentally sustainable practices. Port City Brewing Company at 3950 Wheeler Avenue is celebrated for award-winning beers and eco-friendly initiatives. Blueprint for Peace at Bradlee Shopping Center on King Street features a mural created in collaboration with students from Alexandria City High School.

The commission received numerous submissions across these categories but selected winners who stood out for their dedication to enhancing Alexandria's beauty.

The Alexandria Beautification Commission encourages residents to participate in beautifying their surroundings through various initiatives and provides resources on sustainable practices via alexandriava.gov/Beautification.
