The City of Alexandria is set to commemorate Juneteenth, recognized as the nation's second Independence Day, on June 19. This year, several events will be held across the city to both educate and entertain residents.
Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when Union forces arrived in Galveston, Texas, informing enslaved people of their freedom as declared by President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation over two years prior. In 2021, President Joe Biden officially designated Juneteenth as a national holiday, acknowledging America's "incredible capacity to heal, hope, and emerge from our darkest moments with purpose and resolve."
Alexandria's celebration aligns with two priorities of the City Council: eliminating community disparities and fostering community connection. Residents are encouraged to reflect on racial equality progress while recognizing ongoing efforts needed.
The city's website offers more information about Juneteenth and resources for those experiencing race-based trauma. Community members are invited to attend various events:
- On June 14 at Charles E. Beatley Jr. Central Library, Grammy-nominated Culture Queen will perform an interactive storytelling show.
- On June 19 at Market Square, Washington Revels Jubilee Voices will present a concert featuring traditional music and dance.
- A Martin Luther King Jr. memorial bench dedication will occur on June 22 at Charles Houston Recreation Center.
- The same location will host a day-long celebration on June 22 with live entertainment and cultural activities.
Free interpretation services are available for those needing communication in other languages.
This year's Juneteenth festivities coincide with Alexandria's 275th anniversary celebrations. Events marking this milestone will continue through September.
