Veterans American Legion Post 24 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 609, in collaboration with the Office of Historic Alexandria, are set to honor Alexandrians who perished during the Vietnam War. A plaque dedication ceremony will be held on Flag Day, June 14th, to commemorate the 68 Alexandrians who lost their lives in the conflict. The event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. inside the American Legion Post 24 Ballroom located at 400 Cameron Street. Following the dedication, a reception will take place.

Gretchen Bulova, director of the Office of Historic Alexandria, emphasized the importance of this commemoration: “We must honor the bravery and sacrifice of our Vietnam War Veterans,” she stated. “These new plaques serve as a permanent reminder of their service and our gratitude.”

The public and media are welcome to attend the ceremony, which starts promptly at 6 p.m., with an advised arrival time by 5:45 p.m. Parking options include street parking and nearby garages; further details can be found on the City of Alexandria’s parking page.

Last December, a fundraising campaign was initiated by a local Veterans Service Organization (VSO) based in Alexandria to finance a Vietnam Memorial plaque's placement at both Alexandria Union Station's War Memorial and on the American Legion Post 24 building itself. The first name plaque was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 27th, drawing over 100 community members.

For disability accommodations or language interpretation services for this event, contact Nicole Quinn via email or phone as provided in previous communications.

Alexandria continues its tradition of honoring history while celebrating its founding anniversary through various events planned from April through September as part of its "Alexandria at 275" initiative.
