The City of Alexandria is set to host a rain barrel workshop at the Charles E. Beatley Jr. Central Library on August 3, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. This event offers residents the chance to construct their own rain barrels, providing a cost-effective and personalized solution for water conservation.
Participants must register in advance via the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District website due to limited space availability. The workshop is part of a broader initiative coordinated by the Northern Virginia Rain Barrel Partnership Program, alongside the Department of Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES) Stormwater Management Division and Alexandria Library.
Rain barrels are recommended by the City for collecting roof runoff that would otherwise enter storm sewers. They offer multiple advantages such as storing naturally soft rainwater, which is preferable for washing cars or watering plants compared to mineral-treated municipal water. Additionally, using rain barrels can reduce municipal water bills by substituting tap water with collected rainwater for landscaping purposes.
Moreover, employing rain barrels helps protect the Chesapeake Bay by preventing runoff into streams and promoting groundwater replenishment through slow absorption around homes and gardens. Residences equipped with properly used rain barrels may also qualify for credits towards their Stormwater Utility Fee (SWU).
Residents interested in attending need to register on the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation website. For disability accommodations, contact Jessica.lassetter@alexandriava.gov or call 703-746-4127.
