The City of Alexandria has announced the recipients of the 2024 recognition awards from the Alexandria Commission on Persons with Disabilities (ACPD) in partnership with the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce. The awards will be presented at a reception on June 26.

The ACPD will honor Heather Schofield, a student at Alexandria City High School, with the Gerry Bertier Scholarship. This scholarship is designated for an Alexandria resident or student with a disability pursuing post-secondary education. Dena Penner, Chair of the Alexandria PTA Council Special Education Committee, will receive the John Duty Collins III Outstanding Advocate for Persons with Disabilities Award. This award acknowledges individuals who promote equal opportunities for people with disabilities in Alexandria.

Our Stomping Ground will receive a Commitment to Disability Award from both ACPD and the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce. The organization is recognized for fostering inclusive communities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities by securing affordable housing and providing public programming.

The award ceremony is scheduled for June 26 at 5 p.m., taking place at the American Physical Therapy Association located at 3030 Potomac Ave., Suite 100. Attendance is free and open to all, though registration through the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce event page is encouraged but not mandatory.
