The Alexandria Fire Department (AFD) is urging residents and visitors to prioritize safety during Fourth of July celebrations by reminding them that fireworks are illegal within the city limits. This includes sparklers, novelty items, or any fireworks legally available in neighboring areas.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there were eight deaths and 9,700 injuries related to fireworks in 2023. Data from 2008 to 2023 indicates an overall increase in fireworks-related injuries, although a decline has been noted since a peak in 2020 when public displays were canceled due to the pandemic.
Statistics highlight that teenagers aged 15 to 19 years have the highest rate of emergency department-treated injuries from fireworks, followed by children aged 5-9 years. There were approximately 800 injuries associated with firecrackers and 700 with sparklers. The most common injuries involved hands and fingers (35 percent) and head, face, and ears (22 percent). Burns accounted for about 42 percent of these injuries, mostly occurring during the Fourth of July weekend.
Residents can enjoy City-sponsored events like the City Birthday celebration on July 13 or First Night Alexandria for safe firework displays. More information is available on the City's website or through their Special Events Hotline at specified numbers.
Fireworks violations are considered criminal under Alexandria's Code, carrying penalties up to a $2,500 fine, up to one year in jail, or both. Violations can be reported around the clock at a designated phone number. For emergencies requiring police or medical assistance, residents should call 911.
Free interpretation and translation services are offered for those who need communication in other languages via email or phone contact provided by AFD.
As part of its historical journey since its founding in 1749, Alexandria is celebrating its 275th anniversary with events running from April through September. These activities aim to connect with the city's past while shaping its future.
