Felipe Hernandez Jr. has been sworn in as the new Fire Chief of Alexandria in a ceremony held at City Hall on July 2. He will officially assume his duties on July 8.

Mayor Justin Wilson expressed enthusiasm for Hernandez's appointment, stating, “We’re extremely excited to welcome Chief Hernandez, who will become Alexandria’s first permanent Latino fire chief.” Mayor Wilson highlighted Hernandez's experience in labor relations and his modern approach to firefighting and emergency management.

Hernandez brings 25 years of experience in the fire service to his new role. Previously, he served as Fire Chief for the City of Rochester, New York, managing a department comprising 482 sworn officers and 24 civilian staff. His most recent position was Superintendent of the New York State Academy of Fire Science.

City Manager Jim Parajon noted Hernandez's qualifications, saying, “Chief Hernandez’s experience and technical competence really stood out in a competitive field.” Parajon emphasized that strong relationships are key to organizational growth and success.

Hernandez holds a Chief Fire Officer designation from the Commission on Professional Credentialing and is a National Emergency Medical Technician. He also possesses certifications in fire officer instruction, health, and incident safety. His academic credentials include a master’s degree from Nazareth College and a bachelor's degree from the State University of New York at Brockport.

Upon taking over from Interim Chief James Schwartz, who has served since January after retiring from Arlington County Fire Department with 32 years of service, Hernandez stated: “This is a great fire department. My job is to maintain and build on that greatness.”
