The City of Alexandria is hosting a community open house on May 22, 2024, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Leonard "Chick" Armstrong Recreation Center. The event aims to inform residents about the Commonwealth, Ashby, and Glebe Flood Mitigation Project. This initiative seeks to engage the community by providing information, answering questions, and collecting feedback for future design and construction phases. Following the meeting, a questionnaire will be available on the project website.

The flood mitigation project is designed to enhance storm sewer capacity and alleviate flooding issues near Commonwealth Avenue & Glebe Road and Ashby Street & Glebe Road intersections. Currently in its design phase, the plan involves installing new parallel relief storm sewers to boost the existing system's capacity. It also includes constructing a new outfall for discharging stormwater into Four Mile Run and incorporating green infrastructure to improve watershed water quality.

Acknowledging that such large-scale municipal projects impact surrounding areas, city staff encourage resident feedback to refine construction designs and traffic management strategies to minimize disruption during construction.

Further details about the project can be found at alexandriava.gov/go/4139.
