The City of Alexandria recently highlighted several events and achievements in its latest community update. The announcement focused on the upcoming exhibit "Moss H. Kendrix - Reframing the Black Image," for which more than $18,495 was raised, winning two grants: "$500 for the most dollars raised between 7-8 p.m." and "$1500 for most donors in the free agent fundraiser."

Additionally, this month marks a significant milestone with the 30th anniversary of Alexandria becoming a Certified Local Government. This designation supports historic preservation programs within the city.

The Joseph McCoy Remembrance event took place on April 23 at Penny Hill Cemetery, honoring Joseph McCoy who was lynched on April 23, 1897. Attendees participated in a wreath-laying ceremony to commemorate his life.

Several upcoming events are scheduled in Alexandria. These include a virtual presentation on April 30 by the Office of Historic Alexandria and SmithGroup regarding the Comprehensive Planning process for the Freedom House Museum. A Community Cookout is also planned for April 30 at Brent Place.

In May, various tours and events will take place throughout Alexandria, such as Preservation Tours focusing on "Lost Buildings" in the Berg and Parker-Gray neighborhoods every Saturday, and an Alexandria-Caen Sister City Committee Spring Jazz Fête on May 4.

Gadsby’s Tavern Museum will host a specialty tour titled "Peeling Back the Layers" every Sunday in May. Other notable events include concerts at The Lyceum featuring traditional music performances and lectures celebrating historical figures like Lafayette.

Historic Alexandria continues to rely on donations and grants to support its strategic goals beyond what is covered by city funding. Residents are encouraged to consider contributing to these efforts.

Museum hours have been updated for various locations including the Alexandria Archaeology Museum and Gadsby’s Tavern Museum among others. For more details or to plan visits, residents can visit alexandriava.gov/Historic.

Upcoming commission meetings supporting Historic Alexandria are scheduled throughout May at various locations including La Madeleine and Lloyd House.
