City Manager James F. Parajon has appointed Felipe Hernandez Jr. as the new chief of fire and emergency medical services for Alexandria, effective July 8. Hernandez becomes the first Latino to hold this position permanently in the city's history.
"Chief Hernandez impressed our team with his experience and technical competence in fire and emergency medical service," said Parajon. "He brings a modern, data-driven approach to public safety. But most importantly, Chief Hernandez knows that strong relationships with good people will ensure we continue to grow and thrive as an organization."
Hernandez has over 25 years of experience in fire service, previously serving as Fire Chief in Rochester, New York. In Rochester, he led a department comprising 482 sworn officers and 24 civilian personnel before retiring in 2023. He also served as Superintendent of the New York State Academy of Fire Science.
In his career at Rochester, Hernandez advanced from firefighter to various leadership roles across administrative, operations, training, and emergency management divisions. His focus remained on recruitment, volunteer support, and professional development throughout his tenure.
Hernandez holds a Chief Fire Officer designation from the Commission on Professional Credentialing and is a National Emergency Medical Technician. He possesses additional certifications in fire officer instruction, health, and incident safety alongside academic credentials from Nazareth College and SUNY Brockport.
Hernandez succeeds James Schwartz who served as Interim Chief since January after retiring as Deputy County Manager for public safety in Arlington County. Schwartz's contributions were acknowledged by Parajon: "We cannot thank Chief Schwartz enough for his unwavering commitment to Alexandria."
