City of Alexandria announces Thanksgiving holiday service schedule changes

City of Alexandria government offices will close on Thursday, November 28, and many will remain closed on Friday, November 29, for the Thanksgiving holiday. Various city facilities and partner agencies have also announced their schedules.

Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) will be closed from Wednesday to Friday, November 27-29. The Alexandria Transit Company (DASH) will operate bus routes on a Sunday schedule on Thursday and resume normal operations on Friday. DASH services are fare-free, including the King Street Trolley.

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) will be closed on Thursday but will return to normal operations on Friday with adoptions starting at noon. For animal emergencies or wildlife concerns, residents can call 703.746.4444.

Several Commonwealth of Virginia courts in Alexandria will close at noon on Wednesday and remain closed through Friday. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices will be shut from Thursday to Saturday.

Health facilities like the Alexandria Health Department and others will close early at 1 p.m. on Wednesday and stay closed through Friday. Emergency hotlines such as Child Protective Services and Domestic Violence services remain operational throughout the holidays.

Historic Alexandria museums will not open on Thursday, while most museums except the Alexandria Black History Museum will operate normally on Friday.

The city's impound lot closes both Thursday and Friday; however, fees continue accruing over weekends except for holidays. Libraries in Alexandria shut down at noon on Wednesday and remain closed through Friday.

Parking restrictions by the Alexandria Police Department at metered spaces and residential permit districts are lifted only for Thursday but do not allow parking in prohibited areas. Normal restrictions apply again from Friday onward.

Recreation centers like Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and others open with limited hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday after closing entirely on Thursday.

Residential refuse collection follows its regular schedule during Thanksgiving week with trash pickup starting early at 6 a.m. on Thursday; curbside food waste collection is delayed by one day.

Lastly, the Torpedo Factory Art Center remains closed for Thanksgiving Day but resumes regular activities by Friday.
