The City of Alexandria's Office of the Arts is seeking a Poet Laureate to enhance the appreciation of poetry and promote literacy through this art form. The appointed individual will serve a three-year term and receive an annual honorarium.

The city has had eight Poet Laureates, underscoring the value of literary arts in enhancing Alexandria's quality of life. The role involves commemorating the city's history and events, as well as participating in celebrations, parades, and cultural activities.

The Poet Laureate is expected to bring poetry to libraries and schools, serving as a bridge to diverse communities that may not typically engage with this cultural experience. In challenging times, they provide words of reflection and inspiration.

Candidates can nominate themselves or be nominated by others. They must have distinguished themselves in poetry, be residents for at least one year, maintain residency during their term, accept the ceremonial nature of the role suitable for all audiences, and be 21 years or older.

Applications are due by January 10, 2025. More information can be found on the Office of the Arts website: alexandriava.gov/Arts or via email at poet@alexandriava.gov.
