The City of Alexandria's Office of the Arts and the Alexandria Transit Company are inviting submissions for the "DASHing Words in Motion" poetry contest. This annual event, now in its 11th year, has inspired 228 poets to submit a total of 434 poems over the years. These poems have been considered for display on DASH buses and trolleys during April, which is National Poetry Month.

"DASHing Words in Motion" aims to recognize writers, promote poetry as an art form, and inspire individuals using Alexandria Transit Company's services. The competition encourages a variety of ideas and subjects. Inspiration may come from elements such as the DASH bus motto "Keep Alexandria Moving," bus stops, neighborhoods, roads, or other modes of transportation within Alexandria.

Participation is open to writers aged 16 or older who live, work, or study in Alexandria, VA. Participation is voluntary and selected poets do not receive compensation for their submissions or participation.

The deadline for online submissions is January 17, 2025. For more information about the contest and other literary programs, visit alexandriava.gov/Arts or email poet@alexandriava.gov.
