The City of Alexandria has released essential information for individuals interested in running for local elected offices. On November 5, voters in Alexandria will choose a Mayor, all six members of the City Council, and members of the Alexandria School Board. The ballot will also include elections for President and Vice President, U.S. Senate, and U.S. House of Representatives.

The process to appear on the November ballot varies depending on the office sought and political party affiliation. Some filing deadlines were as early as April 4.

Candidates can access necessary forms through the Virginia Department of Elections website or pick them up at the Alexandria Voter Registration Office. A summary of filing requirements is provided below:

For political party candidates seeking positions as Mayor or City Council members in primary elections, specific paperwork must be filed:

"A candidate in a primary election must pay a filing fee to the City Treasurer equaling 2% of the salary of the office sought ($750 for Council, $830 for Mayor) by 5 p.m. on April 4."

Additionally, candidates need to submit a Declaration of Candidacy, Candidate petitions with 125 signatures from qualified Alexandria voters, and a primary filing fee receipt with their local Party Chair between noon on March 18 and 5 p.m. on April 4.

Independent candidates aiming for Mayor or City Council must file their paperwork by June 18 at 7 p.m., including a Declaration of Candidacy and Candidate Petitions with signatures from qualified voters.

School Board elections are nonpartisan in Alexandria; all candidates run independently by district without any filing fee requirement. Required documentation includes a Declaration of Candidacy and Candidate Petitions signed by qualified voters from their district.

Campaign finance reports and a Statement of Organization are mandatory for anyone campaigning for Mayor, City Council, or School Board positions. The Statement must be submitted within ten days after meeting certain conditions such as accepting contributions or appointing a campaign treasurer.

For further details, interested parties can contact Angie Maniglia Turner at voters@alexandriava.gov or visit relevant websites like the Alexandria Office of Voter Registration and Elections or Virginia Department of Elections.
