On March 12, Mayor Justin Wilson and the City Council of Alexandria declared March 2024 as Women's History Month. The proclamation emphasized a commitment to enhancing women's leadership and participation in economic, social, and political spheres within the community. Residents were encouraged to appreciate women who have significantly contributed to the city.
Throughout March, Alexandria is highlighting the achievements of women in alignment with this year's theme for International Women's Day, "Inspire Inclusion." Various programs are available to explore public services tailored for women, youth, and families.
Upcoming events include a DIY Care Kits session on March 27 at James M. Duncan Jr. Branch Library. This event partners with the Domestic Violence Program in Alexandria to create care kits for women in safe housing facilities.
Another event is Civil War Women’s Day on March 30 at Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site. Historical interpreters will discuss women's roles during the Civil War through talks, displays, and demonstrations.
