Alexandria hosts events celebrating history and culture this December

The City of Alexandria is set to host a series of events and activities in the coming days, offering residents and visitors an opportunity to engage with the city's rich history and culture. A notable event is the virtual community meeting scheduled for December 12, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., where participants can help shape the future of Market Square. "The City is pleased to announce the third round of community meetings for the City Hall and Market Square Renovation Project," states an announcement on alexandriava.gov/CityHall.

In addition, music enthusiasts can attend a concert by Becky Tracy and Keith Murphy at the Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum on December 12 at 7 p.m. Tickets are priced at $25, with a reduced rate for those under 18. Tracy and Murphy are known for their dynamic performances of traditional music from various regions including Newfoundland, Quebec, Ireland, and France.

For those interested in historical celebrations, Carlyle House Historic Park will host "A Carlyle Family Yuletide" on December 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., providing insights into how holidays were observed in the 18th century. Similarly, Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site will present "Christmas in Camp" on December 14 from noon to 4 p.m., showcasing Christmas traditions during the Civil War era.

The Lee-Fendall House Museum & Garden will offer workshops on creating boxwood kissing balls using fresh cuttings from their garden on December 21 and December 22. Participants are encouraged to register in advance as these outdoor workshops require appropriate attire due to weather conditions.

Historic Alexandria continues its mission through donations, special revenue, and grant funding which support staff, conservation work, and educational programs beyond city operational funding. Residents are invited to consider making contributions to aid these efforts.

Museum hours have been announced for various sites across Alexandria, ensuring accessibility for those interested in exploring local history further. Admission remains complimentary for city residents.
