Alexandria welcomes new police chief Tarrick McGuire

The City of Alexandria has officially welcomed its new Police Chief, Tarrick McGuire. The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by Chief Circuit Court Judge Lisa B. Kemler on December 10, 2024.

Tarrick McGuire's appointment as the new Police Chief was announced by Alexandria City Manager James Parajon in November, with his tenure beginning on November 25. McGuire previously served at the Arlington Police Department in Texas, where he gained extensive experience in patrol, investigations, and community relations. His most recent role there was Assistant Chief of Police.

City Manager James Parajon expressed confidence in McGuire's leadership abilities: “Chief McGuire is a proven leader with more than two decades of experience who is realistic about today and optimistic about tomorrow,” he stated. He added that McGuire is nationally recognized for his efforts to reduce crime through community relations and will apply these skills to benefit Alexandria.

As the head of the Alexandria Police Department, Chief McGuire now leads a team comprising 322 sworn officers and 114 professional employees.

In his statement upon taking office, McGuire said, “I am honored and grateful to accept the position of Police Chief of the Alexandria Police Department.” He emphasized a community-oriented approach to policing aimed at building public trust through transparency and collaboration. “I look forward to working alongside our dedicated officers, community leaders, and residents to create a safer Alexandria for everyone," he added.

Chief McGuire also unveiled his 100-day action plan during a media interview. This plan focuses on four key areas: hosting community town hall meetings with residents, establishing an employee community relations board, assessing organizational wellness, and communicating key outcomes widely. The full plan can be accessed at alexandriava.gov/go/6425.
