Due to severe weather conditions, the City of Alexandria has announced that all city facilities and offices will be closed on Monday, January 6, 2025. Essential personnel and emergency response services will continue operations.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning from Sunday at 10 p.m. through Tuesday at 1 a.m., affecting northern Virginia, central Maryland, and parts of D.C. The forecast predicts heavy mixed precipitation with snow and sleet accumulation between 5 and 9 inches, with some areas potentially receiving up to 12 inches. The most significant snowfall is expected overnight from Sunday into early Monday morning.

In response to the impending storm, the Department of Community & Health Services (DCHS) will extend hours at its Winter Shelter located at 2355-A Mill Road from Saturday evening until Thursday morning. Adjustments to these hours may occur based on weather developments.

Additionally, recreation centers operated by the Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities (RPCA) will function as warming centers during regular hours and may extend operating times if necessary. All trash, yard waste, compost, and recycling collections will be delayed by one day due to the closures.

The Household Hazardous Waste centers will not open during this period, and bulk or metal service appointments will be rescheduled. The city's DOT paratransit program has canceled trips outside Alexandria city limits starting noon Sunday until early Tuesday morning.

Residents are advised to prepare for dangerously cold temperatures by identifying places to stay warm such as restaurants or community centers. Supplies should be gathered in case prolonged home stays become necessary due to power outages. Pet owners are reminded to ensure their animals have access to warm shelter indoors with adequate food and water.

Preventive measures for homes include insulating against the cold with caulking and weather stripping while taking steps like allowing faucets to drip and keeping cabinet doors open to avoid frozen pipes.

Road condition updates can be accessed by calling 511. Residents should follow local media outlets or visit the National Weather Service website for current forecasts. For details about emergency warming centers or snow control measures, residents can visit relevant pages on alexandriava.gov.
