Hashim T. Taylor begins his new role today as the Director of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities (RPCA) for the City of Alexandria. He brings experience from his previous position as Director of Parks and Recreation in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Taylor, originally from Alexandria, returns to the community where he once participated in RPCA programs, fueling his interest in public service. In Cedar Rapids, he managed over 5,000 acres of parkland, 100 miles of trails, and various recreational and cultural facilities. His notable achievements there include raising over $12 million in funding for the $37 million ReLeaf Cedar Rapids initiative. This reforestation project was a response to the destruction caused by a 2020 derecho storm.

During his tenure, Taylor also developed significant community resources such as the Ellis Golf Course Event Center and Riverside Skatepark. He took part in updating the Greenway Parks Plan, expanding community gardens, and supporting the Westside Library Park project.

Alexandria officials are looking forward to Taylor’s leadership and his commitment to enhancing recreational and cultural programs. More information about the new director is available on the city's website.
