Rep. Don Beyer, serving Virginia's 8th district, recently addressed contentious issues through a series of tweets. Beyer's commentary pertains to recent decisions and actions taken by former President Donald Trump's administration.
On April 12, Beyer highlighted a tweet addressing Trump's exemption of smartphones and chips from trade restrictions. This decision contradicted a prior statement from a trade adviser, who assured there would be "no exemptions in the near term." Beyer pointed out the inconsistency of this exemption, as it does not include essential imports such as bananas, cocoa, and coffee, which are not produced at scale domestically.
In a later tweet on April 14, Beyer outlined the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia. According to Beyer, Garcia was legally residing in the U.S. when Trump allegedly had him unlawfully detained and sent to a Salvadoran prison. Despite admitting the mistake, Trump's administration refused to comply with a unanimous Supreme Court order to return Garcia. Beyer expressed concern over Trump's interest in applying similar actions against U.S. citizens.
In another tweet on April 14, Beyer further criticized the Trump administration's handling of the Garcia case, emphasizing the necessity of complying with the Supreme Court's order and the constitutional requirement to safely return Garcia to his family in the U.S.
Don Beyer has been a Congressional Representative since 2015, succeeding Jim Moran. Born in 1950 in Trieste, he resides in Alexandria and is an alum of Williams College, where he earned a BA in 1972.
