City officials are actively monitoring the winter weather forecast for today, Sunday, January 19. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the Alexandria region until 7 p.m. this evening.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has revised its snow predictions, now expecting about 1 inch of accumulation instead of the higher amounts initially anticipated. This change is due to the delayed arrival of the arctic front, which may bring rain or a rain/snow mix before transitioning to snow later today.
Temperatures are expected to drop into the teens this evening, potentially freezing moisture on roadways. Travelers are advised to exercise caution.
Residents are reminded that ice on lakes, ponds, and streams can be extremely dangerous. Thin ice is difficult to detect and can break without warning. For safety reasons, it is advised to avoid walking or engaging in activities on frozen bodies of water across the city.
To enhance public safety, residents are encouraged to share these reminders with others. If someone is seen on thin ice, they should be urged to move off immediately.
In response to the weather conditions, city teams have completed de-icing and pre-treatment across Alexandria as of yesterday and remain prepared for today's expected snowfall. The city's snow clearance plan prioritizes primary roads (including snow emergency routes), followed by secondary routes (including hills), intermediate routes, and then residential streets.
Residents can track snow removal progress through the City’s live Snow Report.
Due to extreme temperatures and weather conditions, Alexandria's Winter Shelter at 2355-A Mill Rd. will operate continuously from Sunday, January 19 at 7 p.m. through Thursday, January 23 at noon. Information about warming centers is available on the City’s Winter Shelter page.
Several closures are in effect today due to weather conditions:
- All Recreation Center Facilities
- Torpedo Factory Art Center
- All Alexandria Libraries
- All City Museums
