Beyer criticized the justification and impact of these tariffs, particularly those imposed by former President Donald Trump.

In his first tweet, Rep. Beyer addressed what he perceives as misleading statistics used to justify tariffs. He stated: "These tariffs are justified with absurdly false, made-up statistics and claims about fentanyl, including wildly exaggerated claims about trafficking from Canada, which accounted for less than 1% of fentanyl seizures in FY23 according to CBP." Continuing his critique at 00:26:52 UTC, Beyer highlighted the tariff disparity between allies and adversaries under Trump's administration. He tweeted: "Trump hit our neighbors and close allies, Canada and Mexico, with tariffs more than twice as high as those he put on our geopolitical adversary China. This is a longstanding pattern with Trump: he alienates our friends in ways that drive them away and empower our opponents."

In a subsequent post at 00:28:32 UTC, Beyer challenged Trump's claims regarding who bears the cost of tariffs. He wrote: "Trump claims - falsely - that others pay the costs of his tariffs. Those costs will be passed on to people who buy the products and services on which they are levied -- aka YOU." Additionally, he warned about potential retaliatory measures from other countries that could negatively affect American producers and exporters.
