Alexandria Archaeology has launched the Alexandria Historical Sign Finder, an online interactive map designed to help residents and visitors explore historical interpretation signs across the City of Alexandria. The map includes over 150 signs from various trails and markers such as the Alexandria Heritage Trail, African American Waterfront Heritage Trails, King Street Corridor Mini-Kiosks, State Highway History Markers, among others.
Users can click on any point on the map to access a digital version of a sign, allowing them to read it from anywhere. Dr. Eleanor Breen, City Archaeologist, stated: “An incredible amount of historical and archaeological work over the decades and with a variety of preservation partners has gone into sharing Alexandria’s stories on these signs and we are thrilled to make them more accessible.”
The project was developed by Alexandria Archaeology in collaboration with the City’s Information Technology Services and GIS Office. Corinna Nowak, GIS Program Manager for the city, remarked: “The City of Alexandria’s GIS Office is committed to providing GIS information and mapping to connect residents and visitors with City resources.”
Residents and visitors are encouraged to use the map to discover over 13,000 years of history within Alexandria. For further details about Alexandria Archaeology or accessibility accommodations, individuals can visit alexandriava.gov/Archaeology or contact Nicole Quinn at historicalexandria@alexandriava.gov.

The initiative aims not only at preserving but also fostering a connection between past and present for both residents and visitors through its comprehensive historical narratives.
