The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the area, effective from 9 p.m. Wednesday until 10 a.m. Thursday. Residents should prepare for sleet, rain, and freezing rain beginning this evening, with possible ice accumulation of less than 0.1 inches and sleet accumulation of less than half an inch. These conditions are expected to worsen road safety overnight due to subfreezing temperatures.

Rain is predicted to persist until 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 6, with a slight chance of additional rain later that night.

In response to the advisory, Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES) have treated critical roadways with brine, focusing on areas prone to ice such as hills, bridges, and overpasses. The Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities (RPCA) has pre-treated locations including Alexandria City Public Schools and the Chinquapin Park Recreation Center. They will continue monitoring these sites through Thursday.

The Department of Community & Human Services (DCHS) Winter Shelter at 2355-A Mill Road will extend its hours from Wednesday at 7 p.m. until Thursday at noon.

Commuters are advised to plan ahead and allow extra travel time. It is recommended to stay informed about current weather conditions via local media outlets. Avoid driving if possible; if necessary, ensure your vehicle is fueled and you have a charged cell phone available. State-specific road conditions can be checked by calling 511.
