The Alexandria Health Department has issued an advisory regarding a potential measles exposure in northern Virginia. The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has released further details in a news release titled, “Virginia Health Officials Investigating Potential Measles Exposure in Northern Virginia.”
Individuals may have been exposed to the measles virus at Dulles International Airport on March 5, between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. This includes areas within Terminal A, transportation to the main terminal, and the baggage claim area.
According to health officials, individuals who have received two doses of a measles-containing vaccine such as the MMR vaccine or those born before 1957 do not need to take any action. However, those born after 1957 who are not fully vaccinated should monitor for symptoms until March 26. Symptoms include runny nose, fever above 101 degrees Fahrenheit, cough, watery red eyes, and rash. In case these symptoms appear, individuals are advised to isolate and seek medical care immediately.
Immunocompromised individuals should consult with their healthcare providers for specific recommendations.
