Rep. Don Beyer, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Virginia's 8th district since 2015, has expressed his concerns on social media regarding recent legislative proposals and actions by prominent political figures. Born in Trieste in 1950 and residing in Alexandria, Beyer is known for his outspoken views on various issues.
On March 10, 2025, Rep. Beyer criticized Mike Johnson's legislative efforts to maintain what he describes as a "disastrous status quo." According to Beyer, Johnson seeks congressional approval for appropriations that former President Trump and Elon Musk are expected to cancel, continuing what he terms the "illegal destruction of the federal government." He stated: "Mike Johnson wants Congress to enact legislation to continue this disastrous status quo..."
Later that day, Beyer further addressed Johnson's approach by questioning the integrity of so-called "clean" appropriations that might be revoked by Trump. He remarked: "Johnson calls that 'clean.' Anyone who thinks fake appropriations Trump will cancel are 'clean' should have their head examined..." Emphasizing his stance against allowing Elon Musk and others to exploit federal resources, he declared his intention to vote against such measures.
On March 11, 2025, Rep. Beyer condemned actions taken by Trump and Marco Rubio concerning Mahmoud Khalil's detention and attempted deportation. He argued these actions represent an attack on free speech akin to those seen during the McCarthy era. In his view: "Trump and Rubio's detention and attempted deportation of Mahmoud Khalil are as blatant an assault on free speech..." Despite differing opinions on Khalil’s views, Beyer insists that freedom of speech must remain protected.
