Alexandria, Va. - The City of Alexandria Police Department is currently investigating a series of false threats made towards two Alexandria City Public Schools. The threats, which were received this afternoon, prompted a swift response from the APD to ensure the safety of students and faculty.

At approximately 12:04 p.m., the APD received a call claiming that someone was going to Charles Barrett Elementary School with guns. In response, multiple officers, K9 units, and the Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) team were dispatched to the school to conduct a thorough search. As a precautionary measure, school administrators decided to evacuate the students and relocate them to Cora Kelly School, allowing the APD to conduct an extensive search of Charles Barrett Elementary. After a meticulous investigation, it was determined that there was no actual threat to the school.

While the APD was on the scene at Charles Barrett Elementary, additional calls were received indicating threats towards Cora Kelly School. Fortunately, the police were already present at the second location and were able to swiftly assess the situation and confirm that there was no danger. The safety of the students and faculty remained the top priority throughout the entire incident.

The APD is taking these threats very seriously and is actively investigating the matter with the assistance of federal authorities. Tracy Walker, APD Communications Manager, stated, "The APD continues to investigate with the support of federal authorities who have offered their assistance." The department is urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward and contact them at 703-746-4444. Tips will remain anonymous.

These threats are believed to be examples of a dangerous practice known as "swatting." Swatting involves individuals or groups intentionally providing false information to law enforcement, leading to unnecessary emergency responses. Tracy Walker explained, "Swatting is a term used to describe criminal activity by an individual or group who knowingly provides false information to police suggesting that a threat exists, causing a police or emergency services response." The act of swatting is considered a serious criminal offense and can result in severe penalties. Tracy Walker further added, "Swatting is a criminal offense and can be punishable as a Class 1 misdemeanor up to a Class 6 felony with up to five years imprisonment."

The APD is determined to identify and hold accountable those responsible for these false threats. The safety of the community, especially the students and faculty, is of utmost importance. The department will continue to work diligently to ensure that incidents like these are thoroughly investigated and resolved.
