Historic Alexandria will host several events and initiatives this April that emphasize the region's rich cultural history. The Gadsby's Tavern Museum will hold a women's history-themed game night on April 4, keeping the spirit of Women's History Month alive with games, a cash bar, and a jeopardy game focusing on Alexandria’s Women's History.
The Office of Historic Alexandria is participating in a nationwide Social Impact Study. "The Office of Historic Alexandria is one of forty institutions from across the nation participating in this study." At least 150 people are needed to visit three Historic Alexandria museums and complete a survey sharing their experiences.
The Freedom House Museum is engaged in a fundraising campaign to support its interior restoration. The museum tells the story of the thousands of Black men, women, and children trafficked into enslavement at 1315 Duke Street. Early giving for the restoration has started, with the main fundraising event on April 9.
Events in April include a lecture at the Lee-Fendall House on Civil War diseases, led by Dr. Mary Dianne Murphy, and a walking tour on Alexandria's journalism history led by journalist Michael Pope. There will be a commemoration of the 160th anniversary of the Grosvenor Branch Hospital and a Family Fun Day at the Carlyle House.
Alexandria will also host a special event honoring Joseph McCoy, lynched in 1897, with a program titled "Between History and Hope," shedding light on White Supremacy's historical roots.
The Sister Cities Committee will host a whisky tasting at the Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum, promoting cultural exchanges with Alexandria's sister cities, Dundee, Scotland, and Helsingborg, Sweden.
