The City of Alexandria's Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities (RPCA) has successfully concluded its spring 2024 tree planting season. The department exceeded its goal by planting over 325 trees throughout the city this spring. Including the trees planted last fall, RPCA is on track to plant more than 1,000 trees within a year.
This achievement was made possible through community efforts involving volunteers, city leadership, and donations. A significant part of the spring planting was funded by the Transportation & Environmental Services (T&ES) Stormwater Management Division.
Residents may notice new trees around the city. Over the next six to twelve months, these newly planted trees might show signs of transplant shock as they adjust to their environment. Common symptoms include wilting leaves, yellowing leaves, and slow growth.
RPCA’s Urban Forestry team is addressing these issues with measures such as watering during dry spells, mulching to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, and selecting appropriate tree species for each location.
Despite efforts to ensure successful adaptation, about 5% of newly planted trees may not survive in their new soils within the first year. In urban areas with limited soil space like Old Town, this rate can rise to 10%. The Urban Forestry team monitors all new plantings closely.
