City officials are actively responding to the recent rain and snow conditions while preparing for the anticipated drop in temperatures. The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory effective from 7 p.m. this evening through 10 a.m. Tuesday, with wind chills potentially reaching as low as -5°F.
Temperatures are expected to remain in the teens and 20s today, which may lead to limited melting and possible refreeze on untreated surfaces. Travelers should be cautious of slick spots, especially on elevated surfaces like bridges and overpasses.
The Department of Transportation & Environmental Services is focused on clearing streets and treating areas prone to freezing, particularly elevated surfaces. Crews are prepared to mobilize additional resources if necessary.
The Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Affairs is prioritizing snow clearance at city schools, public facilities, Metro stations, and key pedestrian corridors. Snow removal efforts continue within the city's park system. The department will monitor freeze-thaw conditions throughout the week.
In response to extreme weather conditions, the Winter Shelter located at 2355-A Mill Rd. will remain open around-the-clock starting Sunday evening through Thursday noon. Information about warming centers can be found on the City’s Winter Shelter page.
Patrick Henry Recreation Center and Charles Houston Recreation Center are open until 3 p.m. today for those seeking warmth.
Many city facilities are closed today due to Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday observances.
The Alexandria Snow Buddy program pairs volunteers with residents who need assistance with snow removal. More information about becoming a Snow Buddy or requesting help can be found at volunteeralexandria.org/snow or by contacting Volunteer Alexandria directly.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed by following local media outlets and checking updates from the National Weather Service regarding weather conditions and forecasts.
