Alexandria, Virginia is celebrating its 275th anniversary with a new initiative titled "Mapping Alexandria: Stories of A Changing City." The Office of Historic Alexandria has launched this project to engage the community in exploring and sharing the city's rich history. The year-long initiative encourages both current and former residents to contribute their personal stories and neighborhood histories.

The exhibition, which opened on June 22 at the Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum, offers visitors a chance to explore the city’s history through resident narratives. Attendees are invited to add their own stories, contributing to a collective documentation of Alexandria's past for future generations.

Residents can participate in several ways:

- Contribute to a crowd-sourced map highlighting unique neighborhood histories.

- Record personal memories in the story portal.

- Attend StoryCircles at recreational centers where small groups share and listen to stories.

- Explore an oral history archive maintained by the Alexandria Oral History Center.

The Alexandria Oral History Center is dedicated to preserving local memories through community collaboration. It provides resources for conducting interviews and maintains a public archive for future reference.

For more information about participating in these events or accessing resources, individuals can visit the Alexandria Oral History Center webpage. For reasonable disability accommodations or language assistance, contact details have been provided for Nicole Quinn and LanguageAccess services respectively.

Media inquiries can be directed to Jeanene Harris. As part of this milestone celebration, various events will take place from April through September as Alexandria continues its journey into its next chapter.
