The City of Alexandria's Department of Transportation & Environmental Services has announced the start of a pilot walk-only zone for the 200 block of King Street. This initiative, requested by the Mayor and City Council at their September 2024 Legislative Meeting, aims to transform the area into a pedestrian-friendly space.
The project will be conducted in two phases to test its feasibility and gather community feedback. The first phase began on November 22, 2024, and will continue until January 6, 2025. During this time, the block is closed to vehicular traffic to create a welcoming walking area enhanced by holiday decorations. After this period, the street will reopen temporarily in January and February to address any issues.
The second phase is scheduled from March 14 to September 30, 2025. This extended period allows for further community engagement and data collection. Depending on the results of these phases, the City Council may consider enacting a permanent walk zone ordinance in fall 2025.
Community involvement is encouraged through feedback forms available for residents and visitors to share their experiences during Phase 1. Updates and more information can be found on the project's website as part of efforts to reimagine King Street as a pedestrian-friendly destination.
