As of January 5, 2025, a Winter Storm Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service. This warning will be in effect from Sunday at 10 p.m. until Tuesday at 1 a.m., impacting northern Virginia, central Maryland, and parts of D.C. Residents in these areas should prepare for heavy mixed precipitation, including snow and sleet, with accumulations ranging from 5 to 9 inches and potentially up to 12 inches in some locations. The heaviest snowfall is expected overnight on Sunday into early Monday morning.

The storm will bring cold temperatures with daytime highs remaining at or below freezing and nighttime temperatures dropping into the teens. These conditions are expected to make outdoor travel challenging due to slick and hazardous roads, particularly on bridges and overpasses. The hazardous conditions could affect both the Monday morning and evening commutes. Travelers are advised to carry an extra flashlight, food, and water in their vehicles for emergencies.

In response to the weather conditions, city facilities and offices will be closed on Monday, January 6, 2025. Essential personnel necessary for emergency responses will remain operational.

There have been updates regarding city services as of Sunday morning: All trash collection services will be delayed by one day; Household Hazardous Waste centers will close; any scheduled bulk or metal services appointments will be rescheduled; Paratransit trips outside Alexandria city limits have been canceled from noon Sunday until Tuesday morning; The Department of Community & Human Services Winter Shelter located at 2355-A Mill Rd. will stay open through Thursday evening.

Residents are encouraged to prepare by checking on vulnerable populations and ensuring pets are safe during this period. It is also advised that residents dress appropriately if they need to go outdoors.

For further updates on road conditions within your state, you can call 511. Additionally, information regarding emergency warming centers can be found online on the Seasonal and Emergency Warming and Cooling Options webpage.
