The City of Alexandria is actively monitoring the ongoing winter weather and its effects on the area. According to updates from various city departments, efforts are underway to manage the situation effectively.
The Transportation and Environmental Services department reports that crews have been working since 10 p.m. on Sunday. "Crews are plowing streets in order of priority," but residents are advised to "stay alert, limit non-essential travel, and where possible, move vehicles to allow more space on the roads for plows." As of 2 p.m., 64% of primary roads have been treated and are passable. Work will continue on secondary and residential streets once primary roads are cleared. Snow clearing is expected to persist throughout Tuesday as snow continues to accumulate.
Residents can track snow removal progress using the city's online SnowReport tool at alexandriava.gov/SnowReport. Property owners must clear their walkways within 48 hours after snowfall stops.
Alex311 remains open for non-emergency requests until 7 p.m. on Monday, January 6. Requests can be made via alexandriava.gov/Alex311 or by calling 311.
Contractors and Parks teams from RPCA are busy clearing Metro stations and recreation facilities as snow accumulates. In case of trees blocking roadways or posing urgent danger, residents should call 911. For assistance with downed tree limbs not blocking roadways, call 311.
The Department of Community & Human Services (DCHS) Winter Shelter at 2355-A Mill Road operates with extended hours from January 4 through January 9 due to weather conditions. DCHS will adjust operating hours as needed based on weather updates.
On Monday, January 6, DASH is running a Sunday schedule with snow routes because of the winter storm and Virginia's state of emergency.
