The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a minor winter weather advisory for the region, effective from 10 p.m. Friday, January 10 through 7 a.m. Saturday, January 11. The forecast predicts an additional snow accumulation of one to two inches and sub-freezing temperatures throughout the week.
In response, the City's Transportation & Environmental Services Department (T&ES) is completing post-storm cleanup and preparing for snow accumulation to ensure all roads remain clear. T&ES crews are pre-treating primary roads and critical areas with anti-icing brine and planning for daytime snow mobilization on Saturday, January 11. The Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities (RPCA) will treat ice from this week's earlier storm and the additional snowfall expected beginning January 10.
The Department of Community & Human Services (DCHS) Winter Shelter at 2355-A Mill Road will operate with extended hours until Monday, January 13. Residents may stay in the shelter until 7 a.m. that day.
RPCA recreation centers will serve as warming centers during normal operating hours.
Residents are advised to prepare for dangerously cold temperatures by knowing where to go to get out of the cold. Suggestions include visiting restaurants, shopping malls, community centers, or local libraries. Supplies should be gathered in case residents need to stay home without power for several days. Pet owners are reminded to provide their animals with warm shelter indoors and plenty of food and water.
Home preparations should include insulation, caulking, weather stripping, allowing faucets to drip, keeping cabinet doors open, and garage doors closed to prevent pipes from freezing.
