Snowfall expected to impact evening commute in Alexandria

The National Weather Service has issued an advisory for potential snowfall on Thursday, January 16, which may affect the evening commute. The advisory warns of reduced visibility and snow accumulation on roads between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., with up to 0.5 inches of snow expected.

Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES) is taking precautions by brining critical roadways, focusing on areas prone to ice such as hills, bridges, and overpasses. Meanwhile, the Department of Community & Human Services (DCHS) is keeping its Winter Shelter at 2355-A Mill Road open through Friday noon and will adjust hours if necessary.

Recreation centers and libraries under the Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities (RPCA) will function as warming centers during regular hours and might extend their operations based on demand. Updates about a possible separate weather event forecasted for Saturday will be provided by T&ES on Friday evening.

Residents are encouraged to plan their commutes carefully and allow extra travel time. "Stay tuned to local media to stay informed of current weather conditions and forecasts," the advisory suggests. It also advises against driving unless necessary; in such cases, drivers should ensure their vehicles are fueled and equipped with emergency supplies like a shovel, extra clothing, food, a flashlight with batteries, a towrope or chain, and extra money.

Current road conditions can be checked by calling 511 for state-specific updates. For more information about city services during this weather event, residents can visit alexandriava.gov/snow or contact Berkeley Teate for disability accommodations at berkeley.teate@alexandriava.gov or call 703-7465.
