Alexandria mayor addresses community concerns over recent national events

Recent events in the United States have led to fear and confusion among Alexandria residents. Mayor Alyia Gaskins has addressed these concerns, emphasizing the city's commitment to being a supportive and inclusive community.

Mayor Gaskins clarified that while federal officers may conduct immigration enforcement actions within the city, "the City of Alexandria does not participate in federal immigration enforcement." She stated that local law enforcement, including police officers, deputy sheriffs, and fire marshals, do not engage in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities.

The Mayor reassured residents about the city's dedication to complying with federal and state laws while upholding civil rights for all individuals regardless of their immigration status. "I have the utmost confidence in our law enforcement officers," she said, affirming their commitment to integrity and protection of constitutional rights.

For those seeking further information on immigration policies within Alexandria, resources are available on the city's official website. Additional support for students and families can be accessed through the Alexandria City Public Schools’ Family & Community Resources webpage.

Mayor Gaskins concluded by highlighting Alexandria's communal spirit: "Our strength is in our ability to support one another and to uphold the values that make Alexandria the community we all choose to call home."
