Historic Alexandria is hosting a series of events throughout February to celebrate Black History Month. The month-long program includes free events that highlight Black culture, history, and contributions. Among the highlights are the Martin Luther King Jr. Poster Exhibition, Story Time for Little Historians, American Hair Wrap History, and the Washington Revels Jubilee Voices Concert.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Poster Exhibition is being held at the Vola Lawson Lobby of City Hall from February 1 to 28. Sponsored by the Alexandria Black History Museum in partnership with the Office of Historic Alexandria, this annual event features posters created by students from grades 2-5 in Alexandria City Public Schools. This year's theme is "Mission Possible: Freedom, Justice, and Democracy."

Story Time for Little Historians will take place on February 8 at the Alexandria Black History Museum. It is designed for children aged 4-8 and aims to introduce them to African and African American culture through stories and songs.

On the same day, Dr. Darnella McGuire-Nelson will present "American Hair Wrap History: The History of African American Salons" at the Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum. Her discussion will focus on Black women's natural hair in the workplace and the role of local Black hair salons as spaces of refuge.

The Washington Revels Jubilee Voices Concert will be held on February 16 at The Lyceum. This concert celebrates African American music, history, and culture with performances exploring themes of freedom, resistance, and resilience.

In addition to these events, Historic Alexandria is conducting an Annual Survey of Museum-Goers to gather feedback on how they can better support residents and visitors in 2025 and beyond.
