The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather advisory for the area, effective from 9 p.m. Wednesday evening until 10 a.m. Thursday morning. This advisory warns of potential weather disruptions that could affect commuters.

There is a slight chance of sleet on Wednesday between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., which may transition to snow and sleet after 1 p.m. Residents should expect sleet, rain, and freezing rain throughout the night, with possible ice accumulation of less than 0.1 inches and sleet accumulation of less than half an inch.

Rain is expected to continue through 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 6, with a small chance of additional rain Thursday night.

In preparation for the adverse weather conditions, the city's Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES) department is brining all critical roadways today, focusing on ice-prone areas such as hills, bridges, and overpasses. The Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities (RPCA) will begin pre-treatment activities tomorrow. Priority areas include Alexandria City Public Schools and the Chinquapin Park Recreation Center, Metrorail stations, followed by other city recreation facilities.

The Department of Community & Human Services (DCHS) Winter Shelter at 2355-A Mill Road is open from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. each night. DCHS is monitoring the weather closely and will adjust operating hours as necessary.

Commuters are advised to plan ahead and allow extra travel time due to potential delays caused by the weather conditions. It is recommended to stay informed through local media for current weather updates and forecasts. If possible, avoid driving; however, if driving is necessary, ensure your vehicle is adequately fueled and carry a charged cell phone.

For real-time road conditions in your state, you can call 511.
