Raise a glass to history at the Viva Lafayette Wine Challenge on Friday, February 21, from 7-9:30 p.m. at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, located at 134 N. Royal Street. This special evening commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Marquis de Lafayette’s February 21, 1825 visit to Alexandria with an unforgettable France vs. Virginia wine challenge.
Guests will savor six wine varieties, paired with heavy hors d’oeuvres and charcuterie, while deciding the ultimate victor—France or Virginia—in a friendly competition of grape varietals. The evening will be filled with lively tavern games, 19th-century music, and a chance to meet the Marquis de Lafayette himself.
Tickets are $100 and can be purchased online at alexandriava.gov/Shop. Get your tickets today! Please note that the event will be held on the second floor of the tavern, which is not equipped with an elevator due to the historic nature of the building.

Gadsby’s Tavern Museum played a significant role as America began as a nation during the late 18th century and emerged in the 19th century. It was central to social and political life in Alexandria as well as in Washington's new Federal City. The tavern served as a premier gathering place for residents – including George Washington – and visitors to eat, drink, learn, and influence history. Tavern keepers John Wise and John Gadsby hosted balls, performances, and meetings; their accommodations were known as some of the best by travelers near and far. Gadsby’s Tavern Museum is located at 134 North Royal Street in Old Town Alexandria and is owned by the City of Alexandria.
