The City of Alexandria is taking steps to prepare for expected winter weather this weekend and early next week. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 8, predicting wintry precipitation with potential ice accumulation up to one-tenth of an inch and snow accumulation up to two-tenths of an inch.
A Slight Winter Storm Threat is also anticipated on Monday, February 10, and Tuesday, February 11. Although the exact snowfall forecast is currently unavailable, impacts could exceed two inches.
City departments are actively preparing for the incoming weather conditions:
- Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES) has brined all critical roadways, focusing on areas prone to ice such as hills, bridges, and overpasses. They will continue monitoring conditions throughout Sunday morning and apply salt or sand as needed.
- The Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities (RPCA) has undertaken pre-treatment activities at schools, Metrorail stations, and recreation facilities. They will maintain their focus on readiness for weekend programs.
- The Department of Community & Human Services (DCHS) Winter Shelter located at 2355-A Mill Road will extend its operating hours from February 7 at 7 p.m. until February 9 at 7 a.m.
