The Martin Luther King Jr. Poster Exhibition is currently on display at the Vola Lawson Lobby of City Hall, 301 King Street, until Friday, February 28. The exhibition, sponsored by the Alexandria Black History Museum and the Office of Historic Alexandria, showcases posters created by students from grades 2-5 of Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS). This year's theme is "Mission Possible: Freedom, Justice, and Democracy."
In a related event, a historic interpretation sign will be unveiled at Alexandria City High School's Minnie Howard Campus on Saturday, March 8. The sign honors five young Black students from the Belk and Bradby families who integrated Minnie Howard Elementary School during segregation.
Another item in focus is the 1872 Patriotic Convention Ribbon from the Lewis Cass White collection at Fort Ward. It has been selected for this year’s Virginia Association of Museums Top 10 Endangered Artifacts competition due to its deteriorated condition.
Registration for the Alexandria Archaeology Summer Camp opens on March 4. The camp runs from June 23-27 for ages 13-15 and costs $400 with scholarships available.
Several events are lined up in Historic Alexandria. These include a lecture by Robert Colby at The Lyceum on March 6 about slave trading during the Civil War South; an exhibition titled "Glimpses of Historic Alexandria" at Lee-Fendall House Museum & Garden running through April; and multiple specialty tours at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum and Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum throughout March.
The public can support Historic Alexandria through donations as operational funding does not cover all strategic goals and projects. Admission to city museums remains free for residents.
