The Alexandria Archaeological Commission (AAC) recently marked its 50th anniversary with a proclamation from Mayor Alyia Gaskins and the City Council of Alexandria, Virginia. Established on February 25, 1975, the AAC has been instrumental in advocating for the preservation and interpretation of Alexandria's archaeological heritage. The commission is recognized as a national model for community archaeology.
Dr. Eleanor Breen, Alexandria’s City Archaeologist, stated, “For the past 50 years, the AAC has played a pivotal role in shaping Alexandria’s archaeological legacy, creating a city where history is not only preserved but made visible for all to experience.” She highlighted the commission's contributions to sites such as the Contrabands and Freedmen Cemetery Memorial and the African American Heritage Park.
In addition to local recognition, the AAC received commendation at the state level. On January 31, Virginia State Delegate Elizabeth Bennett-Parker presented AAC Chair Ivy Whitlatch with House Joint Resolution no. 433. The resolution was supported by Delegate Charniele Herring, Delegate Alfonso Lopez, and Senator Adam Ebbin.
Ivy Whitlatch commented on the occasion: “The true celebration is for the dedicated women and men who have served on the AAC over the past 50 years... their tireless advocacy shaped the interpretation of Alexandria’s history.”
Looking ahead to future decades, the AAC remains committed to advancing archaeological research and sharing Alexandria's rich history with coming generations.
