The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) has issued a notification to residents regarding potential measles exposures in northern Virginia. This advisory follows a news release from the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) titled, “Virginia Health Officials Investigating a Second Potential Measles Exposure in Northern Virginia.”
According to VDH, two confirmed cases of measles were reported involving Maryland residents who traveled through Northern Virginia on March 5 and March 14. The individuals had recently traveled internationally together. Health officials are working to identify people who might have been exposed, including passengers on specific flights.
Potential exposure sites in Virginia include Dulles International Airport on March 5, specifically Concourse A and the baggage claim area during specified times. Ronald Reagan National Airport was another site on March 14, with potential exposure occurring on the Terminal Shuttle Bus. Additionally, the Washington Area Metro's Yellow Line Train was identified as an exposure site on March 14.
VDH will update its website with any additional exposure sites identified in Virginia. So far, no measles cases have been reported in Virginia for 2025.
Individuals potentially exposed should review the news release for recommended actions. Those vaccinated or born before 1957 do not need to take action. However, those not fully vaccinated and born after 1957 should monitor for symptoms such as fever, cough, and rash for up to 21 days post-exposure. Immunocompromised individuals are advised to consult their healthcare provider.
