The City of Alexandria is seeking public input on two updated Local Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Action Plans. These plans are part of the requirements under the City's Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) General Permit issued by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ). They aim to address pollutant sources and propose reduction strategies to protect local waterways.
The first plan, the Bacteria TMDL Action Plan, focuses on mitigating bacteria sources affecting Hunting Creek, Cameron Run, Holmes Run, and Four Mile Run. The second, the Tidal Potomac PCB TMDL Action Plan, tackles legacy Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), acknowledging their persistent nature in the environment despite most new sources being controlled.
Both action plans were first developed in 2015 and have since been updated. The City has made these plans available on the TMDL webpage, inviting public comment until April 18, 2025.
Comments can be submitted in writing through an online form on the webpage or emailed to MS4ProgramPlan@alexandriava.gov. Alternatively, feedback can be mailed to the Transportation and Environmental Services' Stormwater Management Division at the specified address.
Submitted comments will be considered for integration, and the finalized plans will be submitted to the VDEQ for approval before being incorporated into the MS4 Program Plan.
Additional information regarding the City’s Stormwater Management Program is accessible on their webpage. For disability accommodations, the contact is Jessica.lassetter@alexandriava.gov or by phone at 703.746.6499 with Virginia Relay 711 available.
